Women in male-dominated sectors
The objective of this project is to better understand the role of gender in shapping early-stage business development processes and subsequent business outcomes. The richness of the French census data allows us to account for a variety of factors that might have venture outcome implications and thus better isolate the role of business processes. We especially focus on male dominated industries because that is where the disadvantages that women experience might be magnified and the gender gap might be more pronounced, whether it concerns securing resources, leveraging networks, or gaining venture legitimacy. While scholarly interest in gender is on the rise, there are few data sources that allow to delve deep into the processes that female and male leaders undertake in order to grow their ventures. Hence by using the French census data we hope to shed new light on the black box of business venture processes and the role that gender plays in shaping them.
