Annual project for exploiting socio-economic data from the marine fisheries and aquaculture sectors

The LEMNA (Laboratory of economics and management of Nantes-Atlantique) will propose a comprehensive publication of socio-economic data from the marine fisheries and aquaculture sectors, in the form of in-depth sectoral publications. This micro-economic observation of the sector will be based on an analysis of monitoring indicators. A number of relevant indicators will be proposed and monitored over time to measure the socio-economic soundness of the different companies observed. These publications will mainly be intended for professional actors of the two sectors concerned. The socio-economic approach which the LEMNA intends to adopt therefore requires access to very detailed individual data, enabling analyses to be carried out according to geographical criteria, business segmentation and targeted production. The confidential data requested will also inform the development of a "socio-economic" decision support tool for developing a management plan for the Bay of Biscay, a study carried out by the Association du Grand Littoral Atlantique (AGLIA) at the request of Bay of Biscay fishing professionals. The originality of the approach adopted herein is to study both the fisheries and socio-economic aspects at the same time. The aim is to analyze the adequacy between the preservation of the economic and social balance of the regions concerned and the objectives of preserving fish stocks. The approach adopted also makes it possible to define "sustainable" economic thresholds for the companies in the sector, notably by taking into account the need to renew productive investments in a sustainable manner. The socio-economic approach adopted by the LEMNA therefore requires access to very detailed individual data, enabling analyses to be carried out according to the spatialization criteria of the fishing industry, business segmentation and targeted production. Finally, the confidential data requested will enable the study on the diagnosis of the shellfish industry in the Pays de la Loire region (EDIFICE research project) to be undertaken. This project aims to establish a diagnosis of the shellfish industry in Pays de la Loire by updating existing data, analyzing recent developments on key issues such as health, mortality, socio-economic impacts, demographics and business takeovers, and assessing the footprint of the shellfish industry in the Pays de la Loire region. This diagnostic phase will serve as a basis to forecast certain sector trends and to feed debate on the profession and the Pays de la Loire region on a policy to support and develop the shellfish farming sector. The approach LEMNA wishes to adopt therefore requires access to very detailed individual data, to develop different themes focusing on the strategy, transmission and governance of companies, their management rationale, and on risk management and regional footprints.
