Jérôme Marchand-Arvier appointed chair of the Comité du secret statistique

Jérôme Marchand-Arvier, Member of the Council of State, has just been appointed Chair of the Comité du secret statistique. He will thus accompany a new phase in the life of this committee at a time when new opportunities for analysis are opening up for research and data science, thanks in particular to the gradual mobilization of very large administrative databases, in a rapidly changing European context.

The Statistical Confidentiality Committee is well positioned to promote these developments. It issues opinions on access to an extremely wide range of detailed data sources, thanks to the indispensable and generous support of the 28 data producers who have chosen to go through the Committee for the examination of requests for secure access to data.

This organization, established around cooperation between data producers, the Archives administration, the CNIL, trade unions, and researchers within the Statistical Confidentiality Committee, makes it a particularly effective cross-sectoral mechanism that is quite unique in the world on this scale.

In the ten years since the Committee’s remit was expanded from focusing solely on business data to include data on individuals and households, the number of cases submitted to the Committee for review each year has risen steadily: from 245 in 2015 to 746 in 2025.

In this context, the expertise of Jérôme Marchand-Arvier, the new chair of the Committee, will be invaluable in consolidating the position and role of the Statistical Confidentiality Committee at both national and European level.
