With the many questions raised by global warming, data on transportation, and particularly on road vehicles, has taken on a new dimension.
European regulations on reducing CO2 emissions from road vehicles are constantly evolving. To measure the gains made in reducing pollution, estimates of the existing vehicle fleet are more necessary than ever.
For more than ten years, the statistical service of the Ministry of Transport (SDES) has been working on matching administrative sources in order to build and strengthen an information system on road vehicles.
The first pairing, which began in 2013, aimed to link data from the Vehicle Registration System (SIV) with data from technical inspection results and the SIRENE business directory.
The new data source thus created, the Statistical Directory of Road Vehicles (RSVERO), has enabled important estimates to be made on the vehicle fleet (age of vehicles in circulation, breakdown by energy type, etc.) and vehicle purchases.
The CNIS symposium on data matching in May 2025 completed the presentation of the information system by highlighting an additional match between RSVERO and data from the Demographic File on Housing and Individuals (FIDELI), aimed at obtaining more comprehensive information on the income, household composition, and type of housing of vehicle users. Further matches are planned for the future (in particular, subsidies for the purchase of low-pollution vehicles).
Since the summer, CASD has been able to make RSVERO and FIDELI matching data available to researchers via the usual Statistical Confidentiality Committee procedure.
