Statistical concepts and definitions
- The different categories of waste generated in 2006 in millions of tonnes:
- cardboard, paper and paper-cardboard mixtures,
- wood waste (unwanted and unused palettes, used wooden crates and boxes, shavings, sawdust, bark, etc.),
- ferrous or non-ferrous metals,
- plastic materials (polyethylene, expanded polystyrene, film, bags, containers, etc.),
- glass (bottles, etc.),
- discarded equipment,
- garden waste, food waste, etc.;
- The destination of waste and how this is managed and monitored: sorting unit or waste reception centre, recycling or recovery of materials, energy re-use, land fill;
- The perception by establishments of the process of waste management: environmental concerns, economic issues, how to rationalise these operations, restriction or obligation, extra cost;
- The resources put into organising waste management:
- waste management organisation in place,
- dedicated staff,
- employee awareness and training,
- availability of sorting equipment,
- existence of waste management methods shared between several establishments or with other establishments in the company or also at group or network level,
- with establishments from other companies on the same site.
Statistical population
The survey covers the principal activities defined by NAF rev. 1 codes: 51 and 52 (excluding wholesale trade in waste and scrap).
