Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease, affecting more than 30% of adults. NAFLD has become the leading cause of primary liver cancer and is on track to become the leading indication for liver transplantation. The consequences of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease extend beyond liver complications, also affecting the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, extrahepatic cancers, and chronic kidney disease. While lifestyle and dietary modifications remain the cornerstone of treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, no pharmacological agent has been approved to date. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is also expected to become one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, healthcare utilization, and healthcare-related expenditures in France in the near future.
