Integrated assessment modelling (IAM) approaches of farming systems allows to simulate contrasted trajectories of agricultural systems from a baseline situation. Characterizing such baseline situation is key to ensure coherency between simulated and observed systems, enabling the relevance of the multi-criteria analysis. Here, we propose to unravel what are the key factors leading to spatial differentiations of French cropping and farming systems, and generate representative crop management pathways feeding the requirements of farming systems IAMs.
