Wage gap according to gender and employee mobility

How can hourly wage differences between genders be related to selection among employees in some companies? Companies pay employees differently even though they present similar backgrounds, and the aim is to see if women work in companies which pay high wages or if it is the other way round, and how the “company effect” contributes to the total wage gap between genders.
