Urban Segregation and Ethno-Racial Discrimination in Small and Medium-Sized Cities

SUDEVIM
French and international research on urban segregation and ethno-racial discrimination has largely focused on the largest metropolitan areas. This is partly due to the methodological challenges involved in measuring segregation in smaller cities (notably the limited size of population categories and the division of spatial units). Studying segregation in small and medium-sized cities (SMCs) would make it possible to interrogate and refine existing theories, which are predominantly grounded in metropolitan social structures. Indeed, the structural specificities of small and medium-sized cities—shaped by the social and ethno-racial characteristics of their populations, local sociability networks, and the functioning of housing markets—affect the forms and dynamics of segregation, as well as the resulting experiences of discrimination.
