Impact of solar ultraviolet solar radiation exposure on the skin an eye health in the general population and among outdoor workers

Université de Bordeaux - BORDEAUX - 2020

The skin and eyes are the main target organs for acute and prolonged exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Major and sometimes irreversible diseases affecting these organs make the prevention of exposure to solar UV radiation a major health issue.
It is also a known risk factor for eye diseases such as cataracts and suspected in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Outdoor workers are therefore particularly at risk of these pathologies due to their high cumulative exposure to UV radiations and this concerns approximately 10% of the population.
In France, there are few studies available to assess occupational exposure to solar UV radiation and its impact on the health of the population, or to quantitatively objectify the burden of skin cancers and eye diseases of occupational origin. However, this type of study is necessary for the recognition of these pathologies as occupational diseases and for the implemenatation of appropriate prevention measures.
