Leaving, Staying, Returning: A Sociological Analysis of Welfare Trajectories among French RSA Recipients

PARARSA
This research investigates trajectories at the intersection of receipt of the Revenu de Solidarité Active (RSA) and labor market participation. It is situated at the crossroads of the sociology of poverty, labor, and public policy. The project examines recipients’ trajectories in the context of recent shifts in social policy and labor market conditions, focusing on two key dynamics: changes in labor market tightness and the growing emphasis on the activation of welfare recipients. It seeks to understand how these transformations are reflected in the trajectories of RSA beneficiaries. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with RSA recipients and employment service professionals, alongside quantitative analyses of movements into and out of RSA receipt.
