Using French administrative data, this project analyzes the role of occupations, firms, industries and spatial factors in reducing gender gaps in wages and employment, as well as the reasons for their persistence. We quantify the impact of factors such as commuting distance, the hours-wages trade-off across occupations, access to high-performance firms and changes in industrial composition.
We document new evidence linking these gaps to occupational, industrial and spatial characteristics, estimate their causal impact and use a theoretical model to measure their significance. These results are intended to guide public policy on the key times, places and mechanisms where these gaps influence differences in well-being between men and women.
