This project analyzes the labor market effects of firm-level advanced technology adoption (e.g. computing systems, machine learning, and more recently, AI). I assess how these technologies affect labor productivity and profit-sharing between workers and employers. I specifically explore how technology’s monitoring capacity can reduce workers’ gains from innovation, as work is made more observable and atomized. I also analyze if intensified monitoring has repercussions on working conditions and labor market power.
